Doconomy and Swedbank Explore How Impact Data Can Enable More Informed Consumer Decisions

Stockholm, 28 September 2026 – Doconomy and Swedbank have entered into a research collaboration as part of an international initiative exploring how consumers can better understand the climate and social impacts of their spending. The initiative will examine how transaction-based impact data, including insights into the climate footprint associated with consumer spending, and emerging technologies could make it easier for consumers to make more informed and sustainable choices.

“Consumers are increasingly asking for better information about the wider impact of their everyday choices. By bringing together financial institutions, researchers and industry experts, this initiative aims to advance our understanding of how impact data can become more accessible, useful and relevant in consumer decision-making. We are pleased to have Swedbank contribute its expertise and banking perspective to this work,” says Mathias Wikström, CEO of Doconomy.

As part of the collaboration, Swedbank will contribute banking expertise, practical experience and market insights to international research exploring how transaction-based information and emerging technologies may support future consumer financial services.

"We are entering a new era of consumer engagement for good and for bad and this is exactly the kind of frontier research we need to continue to evolve towards more sustainable consumption," says Michel Gelobter, Executive Director of the Yale Center for Environmental Justice.

The collaboration is exploratory in nature and focuses on research and analysis rather than the development or implementation of specific products, standards or services.

The research will focus on three areas:

  • Impact data and transparency - exploring how transaction-based data can be used to estimate, measure and communicate the climate footprint and other social impacts associated with consumer spending.

  • The future of digital commerce - examining how financial services can support consumers in an increasingly digital environment, including the role of AI-enabled tools.

  • Consumer understanding and engagement - identifying ways to help consumers better understand how spending choices affect the climate and society and support more informed decision-making.

"At Swedbank, we are committed to helping customers make informed decisions by providing relevant insights into different aspects of their financial choices. Through this collaboration with Doconomy, we want to contribute a banking perspective to research on how impact data and emerging technologies could support more informed decision-making and create relevant consumer experiences in the future," says Johanna Fager, Head of Sustainability at Swedbank.

The initial findings were shared during the week of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2026 and presented in a white paper scheduled for release before COP31. The initiative also includes contributions from a broad range of academia, NGOs and other financial institutions.
